Award gives HIP2B² magazine another reason to smile

The smiley cover of HIP2B2’s latest issue isn’t the only grinning face at the magazine office.  The publication has just won Best Customer Magazine at the Media24 Magazine Excellence Awards, for the second time in three years. 

The award coincides with the release of the final issue of the year, which is all about Humour. 

“We are proud of the work done by the team at HIP2B²,” said John Relihan, CEO of Media24 Magazines. “With excellent design and witty relevant content, it’s really a world-class magazine with appeal beyond its target market.

Most importantly though, it consistently delivers encouragement and inspiration to its young readers, whose positive attitudes toward learning will be the biggest factor in determining their own bright futures.”

According to HIP2B² General Manager Cathryn Treasure (@CathrynTreasure), since the magazine’s inception eight years ago, it has grown in leaps and bounds.  “HIP2B² magazine is currently read by over one million learners annually, with over 4000 high schools across the country receiving quarterly copies. 

In fact, it has the highest certified reach of any magazine to the South African youth market,” says Treasure. The magazine is a key touch point for the HIP2B² brand, which was founded to promote the study of maths, science and technology-related subjects as a means to developing entrepreneurial skills.

The magazine interconnects with the brand’s other touch points, which include a website, mobisite, online radio station, social media, e-mail newsletter, annual nationwide iTHINK Challenge and a powerful peer-to-peer brand ambassador program.

According to HIP2B² Editor Janna Joseph (@Janna_Joseph) of New Media, the team couldn’t think of a better way to end the school year than with an issue that made readers LOL.

From five ways to make someone laugh – and why they work – to funny ideas that made it seriously big (like the Slinky and the Post-It note, both of which started out as flopped inventions), each feature is packed with fun, quirky stuff to end the year with a grin. Readers can even take a quiz to find out which career will make them smile!

But best of all is the cover competition, which challenges readers to take funny photos with the smiley magazine cover in front of their faces, in a bid to win one of three awesome Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro smartphones! It’s another great example of how HIP2B² injects vibrant interaction into the traditional print medium, says Joseph.  

“They say happiness is the best medicine, but laughter can also be the mother of invention,” says Joseph.  “We’ve put together an issue of smart humour, packed with gags, quirks, and fascinating facts that are bound to get our readers thinking about the world’s funny side.

We hope it will keep them smiling right through exams and into the holidays.”
