The Avios Travel Rewards Programme launches in South Africa

02 Sep 2013

The Avios Travel Rewards Programme has launched in South Africa today and is a new loyalty programme allowing travellers to collect Avios points to use for flights in South Africa, Europe and world-wide on premium airline, British Airways.

The Avios Travel Rewards Programme aims to make travelling more accessible to South Africans.

Members of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme can fly to destinations like Victoria Falls, Durban and Mauritius just by shopping at Pick n Pay with their smart shopper card, by filling up with BP* and when using the Avios credit card**, supported and issued by Absa, to pay for these and other purchases.  Avios can also be collected with Avis car rental, on British Airways flights and by selling property through Lew Geffen Sotheby’s Real Estate.  This is applicable to both the British Airways Executive Club Members as well as the Avios Travel Rewards Programme members in South Africa.

Nick Pilbeam, Director of New Markets and Business Development for Avios Group Limited (AGL), says, “With the new Avios Travel Rewards Programme, members can collect Avios on things they buy every day, like bread and milk- so collecting is easy and doesn’t require people to spend on items they wouldn’t normally buy.  Another great advantage is it's free to join and Avios won’t expire, so long as you collect or redeem within three years. This means that members of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme can save money on items such as flights, allowing them to upgrade their accommodation, visit more destinations and extend their holidays.”

An independent survey of 1 000 South Africans conducted by AGL showed that the majority of South Africans only go on holiday once a year (34%) or twice (36%) a year.  Interestingly, when they go on holiday, many only go for between three and five days (32%).  South Africans can now use this new programme to their advantage by potentially holidaying more frequently and for longer.

“We’re very excited to launch the Avios Travel Rewards Programme to help South Africans achieve their travel dreams faster.  With the success that AGL has experienced with the Avios currency in the UK, Spain and the United States, we are eager to grow our footprint in South Africa,” says Pilbeam.

The research also showed that 76% of South Africans who have recently travelled did so locally with coastal holidays to KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape ranking highest.   With Avios, South Africans can widen their holidays to other parts of Southern Africa.

“Members of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme can use their Avios to get a return flight with British Airways to stunning locations like Mauritius and Victoria Falls and beyond; leaving them more spending money whilst they are on holiday.  Flights start from 4 500 Avios and R350, one way, from Johannesburg to Durban,” says Pilbeam.  “All British Airways domestic and regional flights have up to 50% cheaper taxes, fees and carrier charges than most rewards programmes because with Avios, these fees are capped at just R700 return.  British Airways Executive Club Members also enjoy these benefits.”

Respected South African partner brands
At Pick n Pay stores, smart shoppers can convert their points into Avios after they become an Avios Travel Rewards Programme member.  Steve Hoban general manager smart shopper from Pick n Pay says, “Partnering with a company such as AGL, with its excellent track record in travel rewards programmes, truly adds value to our smart shoppers.  Now, not only can customers spend their points on their every day groceries but they can use them to reduce their cost of travel too.”

From end October 2013, by swiping their Avios Travel Rewards Programme card, members will earn one Avios for every two litres of fuel purchased at any one of the 500 BP service stations around the country.  Reneilwe Letswalo , head of retail operations BP South Africa says, “Filling up at BP is about more than just getting fuel. Our customers expect us to go the extra mile for them and we believe that the partnership with AGL will give BP fuellers a reward they deserve. Avios, the Travel Rewards Programme, is another way in which we are doing just that.”

Arrie Rautenbach, ABSA Head of Retail Banking says: “The Avios credit card, issued and supported by ABSA, is in line with our commitment to make customers’ lives easier and increases the collection potential of Avios, while going a long way to boost their points balance.  When the Avios credit card is used to make purchases at BP and Pick n Pay, the points will double, so for every R10 spent, members will get 2 Avios.”

Members can also collect Avios when flying on British Airways flights that have been paid for with money.  They will earn one Avios for every mile they fly with a minimum of 500 Avios for any British Airways flights taken.  With Avis car rental, for every R10 they spend at Avis, they will earn two Avios with a minimum of 500 Avios earned per car rental.  Even selling property will increase members’ Avios balance when done through Lew Geffen Sotheby's Real Estate.  Collect two Avios for every R100 of property value sold.

Members of the British Airways Executive Club can also collect Avios at BP*** and Pick n Pay.
