Cape Town Festival Of Beer 2011 A Resounding Success

Cape Town’s Festival of Beer 2011, a celebration of brewing heritage and craft from around the world was once again held at Hamiltons rugby club from 25 – 27 November 2011.

Featuring over 100 brands; this premier celebration of all things beer attracted over 8000 people!

Brewers from every corner of the globe and from all over Southern Africa took part. Cape Town Festival of Beer is the biggest beer expo in South Africa, a record breaking number of home, micro and mega brewers gathered to celebrate the art of brewing.

Highlights of the festival included, beer tastings, the wide array of food offerings live entertainment, brewing demo’s, a Good Hope FM live broadcast for the duration of the weekend, kiddies area and the annual beer tasting awards.

One lucky attendee won two tickets to the Munich Beerfest in 2012 by correctly identifying Black Label in a blind beer tasting.

Winners of the 2011 awards were:

  • Best Beer On Show: Paulaner Red Weiss
  • Best Mass Production Beer: Birra Moretti La Rossa
  • Best Lager On Show: Darling Brewery Slow Beer
  • Best Ale On Show: Devils Peak Brewery Kings Blockhouse IPA
51 different beers were tasted on a blind tasting by the panel; Cathy Marston, Wolfgang Koedel, Jean Muller, Denis Da Silva and Shawn Duthie.

The organisers of the Cape Town Festival of Beer have big plans for the future, one being to create an official beer route together with Cape Town Tourism, and the other to expand the festival to Johannesburg.
