The Unlimited Certified As Top Employer

05 Sep 2013

The Durban-based financial services company, The Unlimited, has once again been certified as one of South Africa’s top employers.

Independent research conducted by the Top Employers Institute shows that The Unlimited provides an outstanding employment environment and drives and develops talent throughout all levels of the organisation. These have been the key criteria that resulted in the company being among only 71 companies nationwide to have received the exclusive Top Employers South Africa 2014 Certification.
According to Steph Bester, CEO of The Unlimited, the company is honoured to receive the certification for the third year running.  “Our certification as one of South Africa’s Top Employers is a great measure of our success in developing leaders. Managing people is old fashioned and we don’t believe in it. We have true purpose and this necessitates stretching goals which we achieve by building courageous, visionary leaders who want to create a better future; leaders who are able to stay the course when things get tough. So we constantly challenge our employees to own their roles and drive innovation,” Bester explains.
“This approach has seen our business grow from strength to strength and The Top Employers Certification recognises that when it comes to giving people the best opportunities, we are right up there with the likes of Unilever, Microsoft SA, Anglo American Platinum and MTN. We think that’s pretty awesome!”
A global organisation, the Top Employers Institute certifies excellence in the conditions that employers create for their people. Samantha Crous, Regional Director Africa and Benelux for the Top Employers Institute says that participants have to complete the rigorous HR Best Practices Survey, which assesses the organisation’s human resources environment in terms of strategy, policy implementation, monitoring and communication of employee conditions and development.
“The Unlimited offer a wide range of creative initiatives, from secondary benefits and working conditions, to performance-management programmes, that are well-thought-out and truly aligned with the culture of their company,” Crous explains.
Established in 1994, The Unlimited is staffed by more than 1 000 people and they have offices across the country. Bester says that with their drive to put their people first, the packages offered by The Unlimited go far beyond competitive, market-related salaries. The company also offer benefits that directly impact the lives of their employees.
“We want our people to live their best lives. To drive this we created The Unlimited Lifestyle, a wide-ranging programme that helps people in our business to grow holistically. Ultimately, The Unlimited Lifestyle is a platform that encourages our people to live their best life as they grow within their roles and maximise their potential,” Bester explains.
Over and above this, there are a number of other benefits that set The Unlimited apart including profit share and the dependent bursary scheme.
Bester explains: “One of the many ways in which we recognise our people and their performance is by offering an annual profit share which means that each person has a vested interest in the success of the business. When the company is doing well, we all benefit. It really is about creating an ownership mentality for everyone who plays a role in the success of the organisation.
“We are also passionate about education and believe it is the key to creating a better future for our children’s children. That’s why we offer a dependent bursary scheme to all our employees, giving their children access to quality education and opportunities that can change their lives forever,” he says.
It is these types of innovative benefits that have ensured that The Unlimited has received Top Employer Certification for the past three years. Visit
