BBC overtakes CNN in ComScore Global Digital News Rankings

12 Nov 2015

From Theo Nel, Total Exposure

The latest results from ComScore* show that the BBC has overtaken CNN in ComScore’s digital rankings, reaching a global desktop audience of 75.6m unique visitors each month, compared to 72.1m for CNN.  BBC visitors are also more engaged, spending over three minutes per visit and generating close to 1.8 billion page views.

The latest results have seen the BBC’s sites achieve their highest-ranking position in ComScore’s News and Information category, above competitors including CNN, Mail Online, NYT and The Guardian.

Jim Egan, CEO of BBC Global News Ltd, said, “In an increasingly noisy news landscape the BBC chooses to offer facts, context and completely impartial analysis people can trust.  This has always been our commitment and we are delighted that audiences around the world value what we do.”

The BBC puts its popularity down to a programme of product investment, digital innovation and its continued investment in balanced reporting from an unrivalled network of international correspondents.  BBC news is available on digital platforms in 30 different languages around the world.

The broadcaster’s TV offering has also hit new highs with latest figures showing that distribution for its 24-hour international TV channel, BBC World News, has soared to a record 433 million households worldwide.

Improved infrastructure and the rise of pay TV in emerging markets such as Russia, Africa, the Middle East and India have contributed to the growth in distribution, along with the launch of a number of new product innovations including pure HD, TV Everywhere rights, over 120 hours of VOD assets per year and investment in both news journalism and long-form programming.
